Peam Krasop Wildlife Sanctuary contributes to the development of ecotourism in Cambodia

Peam Krasaop Wildlife Sanctuary is a large mangrove forest in Cambodia. This is a high-potential natural tourism attraction because of its diversity. This reserve is located in Bang Kayak Village, Peam Krasaop commune, Modul Seima district, Koh Kong province, Cambodia.

Below the lush green mangrove forest is a 666-meter-long concrete bridge that will lead visitors to see the beautiful mangrove forest. This reserve protects the coast from erosion, provides important breeding and feeding grounds for fish, shrimp, and shellfish, and is home to countless species of birds.

During the boat tour, you will have the opportunity to visit fishing villages, where people use traps to catch fish, which they keep alive until market time in nets. Further out, on some of the more remote mangrove islands, you’ll pass small, isolated beaches where you can land and lounge next to ambling hermit crabs.

Nestled in the picturesque Peam Krasop Wildlife Sanctuary is Boeung Kachang, a community brimming with tourism potential. Located in Boeung Kachang Village, Bak Khlang Commune, Mondul Seima District, this stunning community spans 728 hectares and boasts captivating features such as enchanting mangrove forests.

The community is blessed with abundant tourism potential, including streams, fishing grounds, snail and clam harvesting areas, and sandy beaches stretching up to 6km. But the community has not yet exploited the economic benefits of tourism due to a lack of development partners. Turning these potentials into thriving tourist destinations remains an unrealized aspiration of the entire community.

The community currently relies on business travelers rather than private tourists because they have not yet identified a suitable destination. Boeung Kachang Conservation Area is home to 149 families whose livelihoods mainly revolve around fishing, shrimp and crab processing, fish farming, and factory work. About three percent of the population are civil servants.

Community savings activities developed strongly, mobilizing nearly 500 million riels in capital. These initiatives include battery charging facilities, clean water projects, and communal crab farming. This savings program has contributed to strengthening the community, allowing people to expand their businesses, and promoting solidarity through mutual support.
