Ho Chi Minh City receives membership in the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities

On March 30, 2024, the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee held a ceremony to receive the certificate of becoming a member of the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities. 

This has shown to be a great honor for the city in particular and Vietnam in general. Becoming a member of the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities showcases an incredible process of building a lifelong learning environment for people in the city. It demonstrates the world’s recognition of the policies, commitments, and efforts of the city in ensuring quality, equitable, comprehensive education for the citizens. Therefore, elevating the status of Vietnam’s education in the international area.

Taking this opportunity into action, the city’s administration strives to put forward programs to make the top metropolis of the country a wonderful place to grow even further. 

The Chief Representative of the UNESCO administration in Vietnam, Jonathan Wallace Baker shared that Ho Chi Minh City is a vibrant economic and cultural center of Vietnam and the region. Its commitment to working closely with other members of the network to share experiences, learn, and build a better learning environment will boost the future of the city to become the unique intersection of the Southeast Asia region. 

He also added that UNESCO is very interested in the city’s initiative to build a set of criteria for happy schools, based on UNESCO’s global happy schools framework. This model will be at the heart of educational innovation, placing happiness as a key factor in improving learning quality.

Duong Anh Duc, Vice Chairman of the HCM City People’s Committee, said as a member of the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities, the city will have more action programs to ensure lifelong learning for people.

On this occasion, the municipal People’s Committee launched an action program to build a “UNESCO global learning city” in the 2024 – 2030 period in Ho Chi Minh City.
